Frequently asked questions

Questions parents ask us, answered honestly.

Don't see your question? It's a perfect opener for a free Discovery Call — or email .

Isn't it too early to worry? Everyone says kids catch up.

Some children do catch up on their own — and some don't, and there's no reliable way to tell which from the outside. What we do know is that earlier support tends to mean faster, easier progress, and "wait and see" has a real cost when a child needed support months ago.

That's why our first step is a free Discovery Call, not an enrolment pitch. If your child is tracking well, we'll happily tell you so. Checking early is never the mistake.

How does NDIS funding work with Light Unfolding?

We work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. Light Unfolding is an unregistered provider, which means we're unable to take NDIA-managed (agency-managed) plans yet — if that's you, ask your planner or LAC about moving to plan management, or call us and we'll point you to a registered colleague. Speech pathology and occupational therapy usually sit under Improved Daily Living in a child's plan. Full detail on our page for NDIS families.

How long is your waitlist?

Discovery Calls are usually available within a few days. Because assessments can be done online, we can often see your child far sooner than the months-long waits families face elsewhere. If we're ever genuinely full, we'll tell you and point you to trusted colleagues rather than leave you waiting.

Do you really come to us?

Yes — mobile therapy is central to how Light Unfolding works. We see children at their school, kindy or home across metropolitan Adelaide, or online. Being in a familiar place helps children relax and helps their new skills carry into everyday life.

What's the difference between the 90-minute and 60-minute sessions?

Our 90-minute Standard session is what we recommend for most children — the one that suits a child who needs more time to process, has big goals to achieve, or needs extra guidance. Most children have several goals, and most make faster progress here. It's $290.99, and includes 45–60 minutes of face-to-face therapy depending on your child's capacity.

Our 60-minute Essentials session is $193.99 and suits a child with one or two goals — a few speech sounds to target, occasional check-ins, or tapering off therapy as they finish up. It includes 30–40 minutes of face-to-face therapy.

Both include travel and a progress email after every visit, and both are charged at the NDIS rate of $193.99 per hour. See the pricing page for a side-by-side.

Isn't 90 minutes too long for a child?

Your child isn't face to face with us for the full 90 minutes. A Standard session includes 45–60 minutes of direct therapy, depending on your child's capacity on the day — child-led and play-based, with natural breaks, so it never feels like a test.

The rest of the time is still spent on your child: planning the session, writing it up, child-specific professional development, conversations with their teacher, and the handover to you afterwards. Travel isn't therapy, so we don't bill it — the drive is on us. Every minute you're charged for is a minute of work on your child, at the NDIS rate of $193.99 per hour and not a cent over.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

No — you can book directly with us, starting with the free call. A GP referral is only needed if you want to access Medicare rebates through a care plan. We'll let you know on your call whether that applies to your family.

What happens at the assessment? Will it stress my child out?

To your child, it looks like playing with a friendly adult and some great activities. To us, it's a structured look at their speech, language and communication using standardised and play-based tasks. You can be there the whole time, and afterwards you get a plain-English report, a feedback call, and clear next steps. See the assessment page for the full picture.

Can an online assessment really be accurate?

Yes — for most children, online assessment works very well, and many kids actually show their true skills more readily at home than in an unfamiliar clinic. If your child's situation is better suited to an in-person session, we'll tell you honestly and arrange it in Adelaide.

My child already gets speech help at school. Why add private therapy?

School-based public services are valuable but limited — usually focused on classroom goals and often delivered in groups for short blocks. Private therapy is one-on-one, targets your child's specific needs at their pace, and involves you directly. Many families do both, and with your permission we're happy to coordinate so the plans reinforce each other.

What ages do you see?

We work with the paediatric population — from babies and toddlers, through primary and high school, and into young adulthood. In practice that's birth to 21.

Across both our disciplines: speech pathology (late talkers, speech clarity, fluency, understanding language, school-age communication, social communication and executive functioning) and occupational therapy (sensory processing and regulation, activities of daily living, fine motor and handwriting, coordination, and executive functioning).

What should I do before the free call?

Nothing, honestly — just show up with what you've noticed. If you'd like to feel prepared, jot down a few examples of what your child says (or doesn't), and download our free milestone guide to see which items made you pause. Your child doesn't need to be on the call.
