The Light Unfolding Speech Assessment

Understand what's going on for your child — and what actually helps.

You don't have to piece this together from late-night searches. A certified therapist gets to know your child properly, then you get a plain-English report, a one-on-one feedback call, and a clear plan of next steps — whether or not those steps include us.

  • Often within days, not months
  • In person in Adelaide, or online Australia-wide
  • Report ready for GP, school & NDIS
Why start with an assessment?

Because knowing your child properly changes everything.

An assessment isn't about finding what's "wrong." It's about understanding how your child communicates and functions, what's getting in the way, and the fastest, kindest path forward.

You get real answers

Standardised and play-based tasks show us exactly where your child's speech and language are strong and where they need a hand — no more wondering.

You get evidence that opens doors

A detailed written report supports GP care plans, school and NDIS conversations, and funding requests. It has real value even if you never book therapy.

You get a plan you understand

We sit down together and explain it all in plain English, with clear next steps — including simple things to try at home, whatever you decide to do next.

What we assess

Two disciplines, so we can look at the whole picture.

You don't need to work out which one your child needs. Tell us what you've noticed on your free call, and we'll tell you which assessment answers it — or whether one is needed at all.

Our Speech Pathologists

  • Speech assessments
  • Language assessments
  • The DYMOND assessment, which distinguishes Developmental Language Disorder from dyslexia

Our Occupational Therapists

  • Sensory profiles
  • Paediatric Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs)

If your child needs both, we'll do our best to coordinate them so your family doesn't have to fill out the same information twice. Assessments are charged at the NDIS rate of $193.99 per hour in 15-minute increments, covering the face-to-face assessment, the scoring, and writing your report — full detail on pricing.

What's included

Everything you need to move from worried to clear.

  • Pre-assessment questionnaireA short form about your worries, your child's history and your goals — so nothing gets missed.
  • A thorough assessment sessionStandardised measures plus relaxed, play-based tasks, led by a certified therapist. In person in Adelaide, or online Australia-wide.
  • A plain-English written reportClear findings you can hand to your GP, your child's teacher, or the NDIS — no jargon wall.
  • A one-on-one feedback callWe walk you through what we found and answer every question. You'll leave understanding your child better.
  • A clear next-steps planSpecific recommendations and home strategies — even if that plan is "keep doing what you're doing and check back in a few months."

Our promise

We'll tell you the truth. If your child doesn't need therapy, we'll say so. If they'd benefit, we'll show you exactly why — and you decide, with no pressure. The plan is yours to keep, whether or not the next step includes us.

How the online assessment works

Done from your lounge room — where your child is at their best.

Children often show their real skills at home, not in a strange clinic. Online assessment isn't a compromise; for many families it's better.

1

Book & complete the questionnaire

Once your assessment is booked, we may ask you to complete a short, simple questionnaire about what you've noticed in your child's development. It takes a few minutes, and it means we start the session already knowing what matters to you.

2

The assessment session

You and your child join from home. We guide the session with engaging, play-based activities. You can be right there the whole time.

3

Report & feedback call

We prepare your written report, then talk you through it and agree on next steps together.

Some concerns (for example, certain very young children) are best seen in person — if so, we'll tell you honestly and arrange it in Adelaide.

Assessment questions, answered

Do we have to do therapy with you afterwards?

Not at all. The report and plan are yours to keep and use however you like — including with another provider or your child's school. Many families use the assessment purely to get clarity and evidence.

Can the report be used for NDIS?

Yes — our reports are written to support NDIS planning and evidence requirements, as well as GP care plans and school conversations. We'll make sure it captures what you need.

Are assessments always covered under my NDIS funding?

Most of the time. Most speech and language assessments are easily covered under your NDIS funding, as are functional capacity assessments. The rest depend on your specific goals — we'll go through exactly where yours sits on your free Discovery Call, before anything is booked.

How much does the assessment cost?

We'll give you the exact fee and walk through your funding options (including NDIS) on your free Discovery Call, so there are no surprises. See the pricing page for details.

How soon can we be seen?

Because assessments can be done online, we can usually offer a time within days rather than the months-long waits families often face elsewhere.

Whenever you're ready, we'd love to meet your child.
